Job Description

The big picture:

The VP of Marketing & Communications will oversee the development, planning, and execution of Cardlytics’ corporate marketing, PR and corporate communications initiatives, including overseeing the strategy for the company with business, advertiser, technology, and bank media outlets in the US & UK.

The VP plays an important role in telling the Cardlytics story to build brand awareness amongst brand advertisers and investors/industry partners, keep the company top of mind amongst banks, and attract and keep top talent for employment. The right individual for the job should have experience working cross-functionally with other departments to develop strong messages and bring those messages to market through a cohesive marketing & communications plan, leveraging paid, owned, and earned media channels.

This position will report directly to the Chief Marketing Officer.

What you will accomplish in this role:

Corporate Marketing & Communications Strategy

  • Oversee the corporate marketing & communications strategy for the company to reach key audiences: marketers, financial institutions, investors, current and future employees
  • Develop and execute a plan to reach these audiences through a combination of paid, owned, and earned media
  • Work with CMO to establish executive swim lanes for media & event speaking, and plans for raising company and executive profiles
  • Establish key PR success metrics (e.g., hits, share of voice, type of coverage, quality of relationships, leads/results from speaking engagements, social media engagement, etc.) and work with others on Marketing team to track on a consistent basis

Messaging, Content Creation & Distribution

  • Help establish company messaging, including tailoring the message to resonate with various audiences
  • Develop corporate messaging guidelines to ensure consistent messages are being communicated internally and externally across groups
  • Work closely with Marketing team and others in the company to create a content calendar to address key audiences. Develop, then distribute owned content, including research reports, paid ad campaigns, etc., across a variety of channels
  • Collaborate with CMO and People Operations team on Internal Communications
  • Build upon blog strategy for the company, including working with team to set up a process to create content from others inside and outside the company
  • Oversee the development of press releases and manage edits and approvals before release; collaborate with partners on development of joint press releases where appropriate
  • Develop story platforms, trends and news pitches; write contributed articles and pitch to key press outlets
  • Work closely with Marketing team members to develop and oversee social media strategy, award submissions, case studies, and other public-facing materials

Media & Industry Analyst Relations

  • Develop and nurture relationships with key industry media contacts and analysts – in corporate, advertising and bank channels – and leverage relationships to secure media interviews, industry analyst briefings, and coverage; have a finger on the pulse of what stories are being developed/written and help shape Cardlytics’ inclusion 
  • Develop target lists for executive media interviews/tours; pitch and staff interviews
  • Support CMO’s role as company spokesperson & work with CMO to line up appropriate representatives for interviews and quotes
  • Develop & drive PR plans for product launches, company research releases, plus all other key marketing communications efforts and company initiatives
  • Create briefings (either directly or through PR firms) for company spokespeople prior to all media interviews; provide background on outlet and reporter, previous coverage and particular point of view, plus recommendations on approach / speaking points

Event Speaking, Sponsorship & Awards

  • Coordinate with rest of marketing team and other departments to identify key speaker placements, and sponsorship opportunities, at events
  • Own overall events calendar, and establish plan for telling the Cardlytics story to key audiences through events
  • Oversee swim lanes & speaker submissions
  • Manage company awards strategy and oversee submissions

Internal Communications

  • Collaborate with in-house People Operations team & other Marketing team members on internal communications to keep employees informed, and the Cardlytics culture strong

Agency & Vendor Management

  • Oversee management of PR firms
  • Identify and oversee additional resources as needed – copywriters, colleagues interested in writing, PR tracking platforms, etc.

Skills

  • Passion for developing, and experience managing, strong internal talent
  • Ability to create and manage a multi-pronged marketing & communications program that generates measurable gains in awareness, lead generation, and conversion
  • Exemplary messaging, writing and editing skills, with the ability to write for different audiences
  • Solid understanding of traditional and new media channels
  • Microsoft Office Suite, a variety of social media channels, and PR research tools
  • Agility, and a desire to run toward the fire to proactively solve problems is a must
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude, with a focus on clear communication

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Strong knowledge of the advertising industry required; knowledge of the data / technology landscapes and banking industry a major plus
  • Minimum of 15-20 years of marketing & public relations work experience required
  • Experience running marketing &/or PR in a public company (or as an agency with a high-profile public company as a client) highly encouraged
  • Experience managing PR firms, including negotiating contracts and budgets 
  • Advertising industry experience, B2B marketing, and media relationships required
  • Tech or bank industry experience and media relationships a plus
  • Experience developing company messaging, and tailoring the message to various audiences
  • Experience leading external agencies, including PR firms & other external support resources
  • Experience leading high-profile marketing & PR campaigns
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Role will require 10-15% travel for media & industry analyst relations and attendance at select events
