About the role

Metromile is seeking a data leader to help us transform our huge quantity of financial, clickstream and driving data into business actionable insights. Reporting to the VP, Product and dotted lining to the CFO, this important role will be pivotal in helping us disrupt the insurance industry by inventing better ways to manage risk.

You will

  • Partner with key leaders across the business to identify and prioritize data needs and transform those needs into deliverable assets
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of data assets from definition to prototyping, testing, productionisation and ongoing monitoring for accuracy/recency
  • Own the target architecture for Metromile’s data infrastructure and manage the work towards that architecture over time
  • Classify data by importance (e.g., gold/silver/bronze) and define appropriate SLAs, documentation, training requirements, etc. for each level
  • Work with business stakeholders across product, finance, insurance, marketing and data science, helping them gain maximum utility from our data, ensuring they can confidently speak the same language and guiding their ability to leverage data in non-obvious ways
  • Own the definition for and official data assets associated with key business metrics, ensuring that different groups do not use get different results for the same number
  • Work with data science to coordinate the lifecycle of models such that models can be built from core data and the results of models can be integrated with other core data during analysis
  • Be able and willing to act as an IC in implementing initial phases of projects and processes
  • Experience leading data science or analytics at business at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to build out data teams
  • Solid knowledge of data architectures and technologies
  • Proven ability to build the processes to manage a data lifecycle
  • Strong understanding of data analysis and modeling techniques and algorithms
  • Ability to fluently translate business needs of stakeholders to a technical view for engineering
  • Proficiency in SQL and analytical tools

  • Proficiency in a scripting language (e.g., Python) and a statistical language (e.g., R)
