Job Description

The Data Analyst candidate will play an integral role within the Risk Analytics department by assisting in the development and automation of ongoing reports necessary to monitor and track the performance goals of our global risk management teams (Risk Monitoring, Credit Underwriting, and Compliance). Under the direction of the candidate’s manager, the Data Analyst is responsible for developing fully automated reporting, metrics, and dashboards that will summarize the performance of our portfolio, individual merchants, and department Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

 

The Data Analyst will be responsible for conceptualizing and developing data-driven risk solutions by applying advanced analytical techniques. This person will play an absolutely critical role in the global risk team, developing rules and models to effectively detect risk within the overall portfolio.  As our company grows and we build out our underwriting and risk monitoring capabilities, this person will help build systems to scale our business in an efficient manner as well as developing our long-term roadmap for effective risk detection. The Data Analyst is expected to thoroughly understand the payments risk domain, and frequently interact with risk analysts in the team to understand the emerging trends in merchant risk profiles and translate those findings in to tangible solutions. The candidate will support overall risk goals through detailed data analysis that results in policies, programs, and broad strategies to deliver a world-class risk management experience to our merchants. The candidate is expected to do root-cause analysis of directional change in KPIs and provide analytical horsepower to the operational teams.  The candidate is expected to be a quick-learner and self-motivated to take on new challenges.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop automated executive and management level portfolio reporting
  • Support all business units within the Risk Department in creating and maintaining operational reporting and Dashboards
  • Perform ad hoc data analysis requests and support the various Risk stakeholders
  • Become the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all data related to the Risk department
  • Assist in all lifecycle stages of development of a comprehensive reporting data mart
  • Produce forecasting models, analysis, and recommendations to understand and mitigate risk potential vulnerabilities
  • Liaise with the IT support team to ensure proper functioning of risk systems and enhance functionality to improve effectiveness
  • Perform root–cause analysis to significant changes in KPIs
  • Actively manage programs and strategies for effective detection of credit and fraud risk within the overall merchant portfolio
  • Drive initiatives and manage solutions to monitor and manage the risk within the portfolio
  • Perform in-depth data analysis on risk profiles of existing merchant accounts and prior losses to identify new actionable trends
  • Implement and automate analytical solutions using scripting software or programs and generally smarter workflows.
  • Prepare and extract data from SQL databases. Analyze hundreds of variables covering a wide range of information from user profile to historical transaction data. Identify emerging risk patterns and create new variables pertaining to these. Select appropriate variable list and create optimal risk logic.
  • Partner with cross functional teams of risk analysts, analytical and product development resources to identify and promote new solutions and products that will improve the overall effectiveness of merchant risk monitoring and risk programs.
  • Collaborate with internal risk and technology teams to identify and develop different data sources that can be applied in risk decisioning. Work with technology teams to implement developed analytics solutions in a production environment
  • Communicate complex concepts and the results of the analyses in a concise and effective manner to senior leadership and extended teams
  • Be comfortable to work with teams in various regions and across different time zones
  • Perform ad hoc data analysis requests and other related assignments/projects as requested by management

 

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, business information, statistics, computer science or any other technical or quantitative discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience, preferably in an analyst or data analyst role.
  • Experience in creating advanced SQL queries (temp tables, case statements, inner vs. outer joins, and declared variables) and creating reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Ability to create automated reporting using Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau is highly preferred
  • Knowledge of Big Data or MapR highly preferred
  • Experience using any of programming and scripting languages such as Java, Python, Perl, R or Unix shell scripting is a plus
  • A passion, and ability, to analyze very large, complex, multi-dimensional data sets and translate them into actionable reporting
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Visual Studio, PowerPoint, Word and MS Access with experience creating advanced Excel models using functions such as vlookups, if statements, sumifs, and pivot tables.
  • Familiarity with payments industry and credit risk is preferred
  • Self-directed and thrives in fast changing environment.
