Remitly’s New Initiatives Team was just formed. Through deep customer development, we get to build new growth businesses that expand the products and services Remitly offers to millions of consumers globally.
It’s all the best parts of an early stage startup accelerated by the assets and competitive advantage Remitly has already built and implemented.

Remitly is on a mission to transform the lives of immigrants and their families by providing the most trusted financial service products on the planet. We've helped our customers send nearly $4 billion globally and we're just getting started.
As a Senior Software Development Engineer at Remitly, you are a builder and a leader, responsible for tackling complex technical and customer problems and creating great products backed by great systems. We use a variety of modern languages, tools, and frameworks to build applications and services on top of a scalable cloud architecture. Our startup work environment is fast-paced, collaborative, passionate and growing quickly.
Our payments team is pioneering that growth, launching and incubating our remittance product in new markets while working across all technical systems in the company. We're a small, full-stack team, working closely among business, product, front- and back-end engineers.
Successful senior engineers leverage years of experience to research and evaluate technical options, then apply best practices and design patterns to architect, build, and maintain high quality systems. They work across teams to define and articulate the true technical requirements underlying feature requests, and design with an eye for simultaneously accomplishing company goals, improving existing systems, and reducing technical debt. They are also acutely aware that software isn’t complete after shipping, instead designing for stability, monitoring, and maintenance over time; they create systems that can evolve but last for years. More than just building, senior engineers also mentor, evangelize best practices and continuously push for technical excellence across the company.
Some examples of current interesting problems include:
Integrating a scalable platform for connecting to diverse bank APIs around the globe to collect, manage, and track funds
Creating innovative customer experiences offering our service in new countries, enabling new payment methods, reducing fraud risk reduction or improving operational supportability
Building resilient systems to detect and respond to external system outages
Routing traffic among external systems with inputs around dynamic pricing, availability, SLA and other data
Requirements:
A BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
5+ years of experience as a software developer
A deep understanding of software development best practices, system design, software design patterns and algorithms
A proven track record of building, shipping, and maintaining web services and systems on AWS
Expertise in one or more general purpose languages like Java, JavaScript, Go, PHP, Python, C# or Ruby
Strong ability to mentor and influence other engineers
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience defining and influencing technical best practices across a team

Who We Are:
Remitly was founded with a mission to make sending money safe, convenient, and less expensive for the millions of people who send money home to their families everyday. Remitly is disrupting an antiquated 500B remittance industry by building a product that not only our customers love, but that has a real impact in their lives. We’re putting the power back into the hands of the consumer—where we believe it should be.
Remitly is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Individuals seeking employment at Remitly are considered without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
Through deep customer development, the New Initiatives team gets to build new exponential growth businesses beyond the core remittance product, consistent with Remitly’s vision, by leveraging Remitly’s competitive advantages.
It’s all the best parts of an early stage startup, accelerated by the assets and competitive advantage Remitly has already built and implemented, an extraordinary mission to transform the lives of immigrants and their families by creating the most trusted financial services on the Planet.
This position is what the founder in charge of product would do at an early stage startup. You’ll explore broadly by doing extensive customer development work. You’ll run tests, iterate, and find paydirt. Then you’ll scale a team and own the business’ growth until it is ready to graduate into the core business. Then you’ll get to do it all over again.
We’re looking for someone with a very high emotional intelligence (or EQ) that LOVES spending time with customers. You get antsy if you haven’t talked directly with customers in a couple weeks. You put people at ease, know what and how to ask great questions, make people feel valued, and are comfortable across cultures and socio-economic classes. You are able to hear what’s not being said and identify unspoken customer needs.
You will take those unspoken needs and translate them into solutions that create big opportunities for Remitly. You already know how to run proper qualitative and quantitative tests with customers. You can see the big picture and build the business case to get there.
You have management experience and love leading cross functional teams. You can communicate a vision to your team, to the customer, and to your investors (the management team). You know how to work with designers and engineers to build products and prioritize. You have the courage and tenacity to say no to anything but critical items.
Success will be measured by the size of the businesses you build and the efficiency with which you build them. Part of our charter is to be the team that cannibalizes our own core business with what’s next. It doesn’t get better than that.
You will report to the Director of New Initiatives and work collaboratively with your Explorer peers to share customer insights and figure out which businesses to double down on.
What We Offer:
A focused, scrappy, motivated core team
Real autonomy, fully supported by the management team and board
An environment filled with passionate and driven individuals that will challenge your thinking and push you
Some bigco perks like camaraderie of a larger team, beautiful new office space in downtown Seattle with free snacks and nitro stumptown cold brew
Competitive salary, stock options, unlimited PTO, a fully paid Orca transit card, medical/dental/vision
Minimum Qualifications:
Proficiency in customer development
Ability to distill broad ideas into crisp concepts
Ability to wireframe, think through product at length
Ability to build business cases thinking through market sizing, unit economics, competitive advantage, opportunity cost
3+ years of building software products
Impatience with figuring things out. A hunger for things to always be better
Excellent written and verbal communication
Extra Credit:
Entrepreneurs or product people in early stage startups
Background in Fintech or consumer products
Other languages: Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, French, Portuguese, Malay
