You will be learning about how Nobel-prize winning behavioral economics concepts can be applied to help the up-and-coming understand their financial maturity and best tailor Acorns financial capabilities to help the up-and-coming advance their financial maturity with a personalized portfolio of services.

You will grow with Acorns and be responsible for an increasing portfolio of intelligent product features from concept design to technical specification, to engineering and QA, to deployment and operations. You will also be responsible for mentoring junior members of the team and communicate across domains with leaders in product, design, engineering, analytics, and business.

Your peers are PhDs with backgrounds in Math and Computer Science from institutions such as CMU, Berkeley, and MIT, with diverse background in FinTech and AdTech, as well as industry-hardened rigor in data science best practices.

There will be the hard-fought battles with noisy real-world data, with surprising nuggles of previously-unknown insights about human nature, and opportunities to stay up to date on academic research, as well as file patents on their practical applications.

Within 1 month, you will:

  • Have researched Nobel-prize winning behavioral economics concepts and discovered opportunities to apply the concepts to the portfolio of products at Acorns
  • Presented the findings to team members across product, engineering, analytics, and operations

Within 6 months, you will:

  • Have established architecture and implementation for intelligence-driven product features in a data-rich environment to help tailor a portfolio of services to the up-and-coming using concepts from behavioral economics
  • Mentored junior members of the team on data science best practices

Within 12 months, you will:

  • Have developed patent-worthy solutions at the intersection of Fintech and AdTech, to engage users in good financial habits using behavioral economics to grow an industry-disrupting subscription-based model for financial services for the best financial interest of the up-and-coming
  • Worked closely with product teams to recommend areas for next gen Acorns products
  • Developed junior members of the team professionally towards their career goals

What you will bring to Acorns:

  • Empathy with customers’ financial situations and the willingness to help users in need with personalized products and services.
  • Uphold the values of transparency, highest ethical standards, and unconditional support of the team.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Capabilities to build algorithms that touch the cutting edge of statistics and machine learning.
  • Apply state of the art machine learning, statistics or data mining in a variety of areas, including user analysis and data product design.
  • Wrangle data and find solutions regardless of speed or scale — everything is in play, from Hadoop, Spark, to columnar relational databases and beyond.
  • Develop scalable and efficient methods for large scale data analyses and model development.
  • Derive pride from technical excellence, and pursue excellence in all areas of work.


  • MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or a related field.
  • 4+ years experience in working with noisy real world structured and semi-structured data.
  • Proficiency in Python, Scala, or R, with related statistical and machine learning packages.
  • Background in NLP,  data mining, machine learning, statistical analysis, and modeling, with experience deploying models in a production environment.
  • Experience with A/B testing methodologies and experiments.
  • Strong SQL abilities and experience with massive relational database systems.
  • Superior communication skills, including the ability to take complex, ambiguous topics and create compelling narratives for different audiences.
  • Driven to learn fast, be creative, and win as a team.


  • PhD in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or a related field.
  • Ability to write production quality code.
  • Experience considering user psychology and user experience.
  • Experience with distributed computing frameworks like Hadoop, Redshift, Spark, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic macroeconomic concepts.
