Job summary

Help us fulfill our vision to guide the strategic success of our customers using Red Hat's open source software. The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs (OIL) team is looking for a Senior User Experience (UX) Designer to join us in the UK. In this role, you’ll contribute to our vision and help us distill it into a residency-style engagement, where we work together with customers in small teams to build, test, and iterate over innovative application prototypes attached to real business value. You will use a variety of modern application development practices, along with emerging technologies from the communities of open source, to get it done. You will also perform rapid prototyping that allows us to verify key assumptions and test hypothesis before a single line of code has been written. Our Agile and DevOps practices enable us to develop fast innovative solutions, while the UX work focuses our efforts on building the right thing and how the users would really use it. Throughout the life cycle of a residency or project, you will be responsible for all aspects of UX and UI including user research, rapid prototyping, wireframing, interaction design, usability, and heuristics testing. We’ll need you to shape the development team and coach the client decision-makers in delivering a compelling design.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Lead the definition of a structured approach to user research, rapid prototyping, UX, accessibility, interaction, usability testing and heuristics violation analysis in client engagements for Red Hat OIL
  • Lead the creation of an ever-evolving framework of design standards and patterns for making good design decisions
  • Support in the pre-sales process for evaluation and scoping of solutions
  • Coach and mentor both UX designers and developers in lean UX concepts and good practices
  • Advise clients on both the big picture as well as the details of UX and UI; act as an advocate building better understanding of UX and UI concepts
  • In client engagements of Red Hat Open Innovation Labs:
  • Perform user research to uncover unmet user needs
  • Lead design workshops, Design Sprints, Research Sprints, and Design Thinking
  • Build rapid prototypes or wire frames to facilitate the validation of major assumptions, hypothesis and align the team on the key aspects of the solution
  • Coach developers and decision-makers on both Red Hat and customer side
  • Comfortably articulate the required balance between persuasive design and ethical design
  • Help define testing strategy
  • Plan and carry out usability tests
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data in working with product owners on prioritization of issues

Required skills

  • 5+ years of UX design experience
  • Experience in customer facing and advisory roles
  • Experience with agile software development; Scrum will also be considered
  • Experience with Lean UX approach
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring UX designers
  • Good understanding of all elements of UX
  • Experience of working closely with developers, e.g. pairing in writing JavaScript code; some broad development skills is a plus
  • Applied knowledge in rapid prototyping, wireframing, paper prototyping methods and tools
  • Good knowledge of both Persuasive Design and Ethical Design
  • Good knowledge of Accessibility Interaction Design
  • Experience in running design workshops, Design Sprints, Research Sprints, combined with the use of Prototyping, Journey Mapping, Event Storming, Service Design
  • Ability to think innovatively of UX with desire to blog, present at conferences and events, and deliver training and coaching to upcoming designers
  • Experience in both B2B and B2C environment
  • Experience with web analytics and data-informed design
  • Enjoy working in partnership with developers and product owners
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% to client locations throughout EMEA
