People choose to start, run and work at small businesses to make a difference and have a positive impact. Small business owners and managers cite a set of common challenges that stand in their way of achieving that impact fully: hiring, paying, and taking care of their teams. And employees trying to do the best work of their lives face real and daunting questions around payroll taxes, health insurance, and making sense of retirement and college saving options.
Today, Gusto provides an incredible payroll, benefits and HR service to help businesses and their employees navigate these challenges and every other that has to do with creating great places to work. But our mission extends far beyond.
Gusto Tomorrow
We believe Gusto’s narrative can be stronger and reach more people. We serve over 60,000 companies and have an average NPS (Net Promoter Score) of over 70. We save time and reduce errors for employers, and are bringing new employee benefits to market, enabling companies of any size to provide the best to their teams. While we’re actually delivering a differentiated value, awareness of that is still low.
We believe that Gusto’s narrative will develop and grow substantially in the coming years. Our mission includes doing much more than simply dislodging existing service providers in the payroll industry. We are actively building and launching new products and strategies for the future and need a communications strategy that extends ahead.
About the job
We are looking for a gifted leader to create and run an innovative and truly impactful communications strategy and team that defies precedent. That leader will craft and bring the Gusto narrative to our key audiences, driving short-term growth while building for a bolder future. Today, our key audiences range from the small business community, to the accountants and other professionals who serve them, to talent we’d like to attract, engage, and retain, and finally to our investors and allies. This role reports to the CMO in SF, but will work closely with our entire C-suite of spokespeople.
About you
You have used world-class communications strategies to grow companies in competitive environments. You’ve gone beyond execution and helped build a company’s story over time and effectively through different phases of growth. You can inspire greatness in our dynamic and visible executive spokespeople through your own poise, passion, and articulation.
In addition to your long-standing successes growing businesses through PR and earned media strategies, you’ll also bring a deep passion for brand and culture that will allow you contribute to internal communications in perfect harmony with external.
Your specific experience
You’ve built and scaled best-in-class communications teams, strategies, programs from the ground up
You’ve led entire communications functions: PR (media relations, crisis communications, trade press), executive programs (speaking engagements, bylines, media opportunities)
You have both private and public company experience, B2B and B2C
You can create more than just messaging, but an entire integrated communications strategy
You can deliver innovative event strategies that increase awareness and consideration
10+ years in communications with demonstrable successes
Your day to day
Create and execute proactive communications campaigns that increase awareness of Gusto among our key audiences
Act as primary contact for top-tier press while empowering your team in media relations, giving us both broad and deep connections to business and consumer press
Proactively report on outcomes, tactics, and program evolution to internal teams (executives as well as the company at large)
Coordinate and manage executive team as spokespeople, including creating positioning, facilitating training, and producing executive communications ranging from ghostwriting to prep for broadcast
Create systematic programs to scale our communications efforts (e.g. social broadcast of Gusto news across influencers, teams, and allies; personality-driven content publications)
Maintain an always-on program that monitors our communications programs and reputation, with response and escalations protocols that maximize opportunities as well as mitigate risk
Your unique attributes
Inspiring storytelling capabilities
Perfectionism about the work you and your team create regarding logic, clarity, language, and information design
Dedication to building and empowering a high performing team
Composure under pressure with a reputation for delivering
Ability to prioritize based on outcomes, and structure and motivate a highly productive team
A hunger for learning and growth, allowing you to embrace failure and change, leading to constant improvement
About Gusto
Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

A Better company
It’s hard not to be excited about mortgages when you’re actively upending the conventions of a $13 trillion dollar business that impacts over 200 million Americans.
At Better, we’re building a next-generation mortgage lender from the ground up. Our team combines leading software engineers from tech giants like Google and Spotify with financial talent from firms like Blackstone and Bridgewater, creating a hybrid institution unlike any other.
Rife with antiquated processes, the home finance industry has remained fundamentally unchanged since the 1970s. As we break down the entrenchments that bar so many from the benefits of homeownership, we adhere to three basic principles:
Humans are better than computers at expressing empathy, understanding individual situations, and creating solutions to help people. Let them.
Computers are more efficient than humans at working with massive data sets, performing complex calculations, and validating thousands of rules. Use them.
The rules of the status quo are broken. Change them.
Join our mortgage revolution.
A Better opportunity
Better is looking for Analysts to join the team. This person will be responsible for conducting detailed credit analysis of loan applications and managing the collection of all required loan documentation to obtain final credit approval. If you have a general interest and aptitude for finance and technology, we’d love to hear from you. The ideal candidate will be a highly organized communicator capable of making sound decisions while maintaining composure in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities will include:
Learn the ‘ins-and-outs’ of the mortgage business quickly and become an expert in consumer finance (e.g., review of income, assets, credit, and property)
Drive the continuous re-engineering of our mortgage production process by thinking critically about how we can leverage technology to resolve operational gaps/challenges
Verify and analyze all necessary financial information and documentation
Calculate qualifying ratios, determine creditworthiness
Request and manage organization of borrower loan documentation
Attributes we value
Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently
Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced environment
Perform well in team environments
An attitude of continuous improvement (always looking for ways to improve/optimize our process)
Willingness to hustle and “do whatever it takes” to accomplish the mission

At Affirm we are using technology to re-imagine and re-build core parts of financial infrastructure to enable friendlier and more transparent financial products and services that improve lives.
We believe the financial industry is fundamentally broken. Not only is the core infrastructure built with technology from the 1970s, but there are a dwindling number of people who say "I trust my bank to look out for me". It doesn’t have to be this way, and it’s our mission to fix this problem.
We are based in San Francisco; founded by Max Levchin (founding CTO of PayPal), Jeff Kaditz (CDO DeNA/ngmoco), and Nathan Gettings (founding CTO of Palantir); and building a team of exceptionally talented people to join us on our mission.
